Step 1: Arrival & Check-in
Upon arrival at the hammam, you'll be greeted by staff who will explain the process and services available. Most traditional hammams have separate entrances or designated hours for men and women. You'll typically choose from different service packages:
- Basic Service: Self-service steam with towels provided
- Traditional Service: Steam plus kese (scrub) treatment
- Full Service: Steam, kese, soap massage, and oil massage
- Luxury Package: All services plus additional treatments
Step 2: Changing & Preparation
You'll be shown to a changing area with individual cubicles or lockers. Here's what happens:
- Remove all clothing and jewelry (most hammams provide secure storage)
- You'll be given a pestemal (traditional cotton wrap) to wear
- Wooden clogs or slippers are provided for walking on wet surfaces
- Some hammams provide a small towel for additional modesty
Tip: Don't worry about modesty - the pestemal covers you appropriately, and the staff are professional and respectful.
Step 3: Steam & Relaxation
Now comes the heart of the hammam experience - the steam room itself:
The Environment
- Heated marble platform in the center (göbek taşı)
- Temperature around 40-50°C (104-122°F)
- High humidity from hot steam
- Beautiful domed ceiling with natural light
- Marble basins around the walls
What You'll Do
- Lie or sit on the warm marble platform
- Let your body gradually warm up
- Splash yourself with warm water from basins
- Begin to sweat and relax deeply
- Prepare your skin for the scrub treatment
Important: Take your time here. The steaming process softens your skin and opens your pores, making the subsequent treatments more effective.
Step 4: Scrub & Massage Treatments
This is where the magic happens. A professional attendant (called tellak for men or natır for women) will perform traditional treatments:
The Kese Scrub
Using a rough mitt called kese, the attendant will vigorously scrub your entire body:
- Removes dead skin cells, revealing soft, smooth skin underneath
- Can be intense but shouldn't be painful
- You'll see rolls of dead skin coming off (this is normal and good!)
- The attendant will rinse you frequently with warm water
Soap Massage
After the scrub, you'll receive a soap massage:
- Traditional olive oil soap creates rich, luxurious foam
- Gentle massage helps you relax after the vigorous scrub
- Cleanses and moisturizes your newly revealed skin
- Often includes a scalp massage
Communication: Don't hesitate to indicate if the pressure is too strong or too gentle. The attendant wants you to be comfortable.
Step 5: Rest & Refreshments
After your treatments, you'll transition to the relaxation phase:
- Return to the changing area and wrap yourself in clean, dry towels
- Many hammams have a rest area with comfortable seating
- Traditional Turkish tea (çay) is often served
- Some places offer light snacks or Turkish delights
- Take time to relax and let your body cool down gradually
- Hydrate well - you've sweated a lot!
Aftercare: Your skin will be extremely soft and sensitive after the treatment. Avoid sun exposure and heavy clothing immediately after.
